Homework will be assigned nightly, Monday through Thursday, except in extenuating circumstances (assembly, field trip, etc.) Homework is 100% the student's responsibility, and should be completed independently. Homework is typically 5-10 problems, and is designed to serve as review of skills already mastered. Students should not be learning or relearning material in order to complete their homework; it is meant to serve as reinforcement of skills mastered in class. Homework is graded for correctness, and it is due the following day that it is assigned. Late homework is not accepted unless the student has been absent.

Gifted class is structured differently than a traditional math class. The focus of the class is developing strong critical thinkers and problem solvers. Students are frequently assessed and pretested, and placed into flexible small groups that best meet their needs. Every class period consists of a whole group problem solving period, in which students work collaboratively to solve a difficult, open-ended math problem through discussion. This part of class does not produce any graded work, but it is a time for me to help develop and monitor the gifted goals of creativity, problem solving, and interpersonal skills. After this 5-10 minute period, students are taught math concepts in a hands-on, discovery- and inquiry-based format.
