Past, Present, and Future Tense

Verb tense shows when an action happened. The action could have already happened, it could be happening now, or it could be happening in the future.

Present tense: shows actions that are happening now.
A fish jumps out of the water.
I am sitting in my car.
The students sit down.

Past tense: shows actions that already happened.
I went to work yesterday.
The football game was on TV yesterday.
Mary won the contest.

Future tense: shows actions that are going to happen in the future.
We will sing at the choir concert.
My dog will wag its tail when I get home.
Whoever wins the contest will earn a prize.
